5:30 AM -     Where Have All the Sheep Gone?

Location:  Dede Ewald Room
Contact:   / /
Description:  This is the story of sheep and the journey taken by shepherds and sheep ranchers to build an empire prior to Arizona becoming a state.  But, it could also have been the story of any of the western states as herders and sheep ranchers moved their flocks.  A collection of family histories detailing their tenacity and perseverance make-up the bulk of the book.  The cyclical movement of the sheep between seasons was documented with first hand knowledge as the author followed one of the last sheep families left in the state and their flock of sheep on the trail.

Location:  Dede Ewald Room
Contact:   / /
Description:  Our Smile Club (OSC) is a grassroots movement created by one woman, Madaline Weber, who had a thought to doodle, created a design, and had another thought to share it with the world. So, she made copies of her famous SMILE cards, and with random acts of kindness she invited individuals to join Our Smile Club. The only rule of the team is to smile at others in order to assist in healing our world one smile at a time.

Since April of 2014 over 8,000 copies have been circulated and live in windows, on dressers, in cars, on refrigerators and offices all around the world. The responses to these cards, these acts of bravery and kindness have spread. In Cottonwood, Arizona, these cards live in most business windows and Madaline is famous in her home town as the Smile Lady and the Great Hugger.

Conscious communication can be defined as a way of talking and listening that is focused on growing strong, mutually enriching relationships. Our Smile Club is a new discussion group focusing on conscious communication that will meet at the library every Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. starting on January 4. OSC is about discovering your personal foundation where one can find certainty in relationships with self and others.

The views, information, or opinions expressed during this program are solely those of the individuals involved and do not necessarily represent those of the City of Cottonwood or its employees.

Volunteers serve at thousands of local organizations that:
  • Help children learn to read and provide one-on-one tutoring
  • Mentor troubled teenagers and young mothers
  • Care for premature infants or children with disabilities
  • Help children who have been abused or neglected
All you need to join is the ability to give the kind of comfort and love that sets a child on the path toward a successful future. If you’re 55 or older and want to share your experience and compassion, you have what it takes to be a Foster Grandparent.
