1:00 PM - 2:30 PM    Our Smile Club

Location:  Dede Ewald Room
Contact:   / /
Description:  Our Smile Club (OSC) is a grassroots movement created by one woman, Madaline Weber, who had a thought to doodle, created a design, and had another thought to share it with the world. So, she made copies of her famous SMILE cards, and with random acts of kindness she invited individuals to join Our Smile Club. The only rule of the team is to smile at others in order to assist in healing our world one smile at a time.

Since April of 2014 over 8,000 copies have been circulated and live in windows, on dressers, in cars, on refrigerators and offices all around the world. The responses to these cards, these acts of bravery and kindness have spread. In Cottonwood, Arizona, these cards live in most business windows and Madaline is famous in her home town as the Smile Lady and the Great Hugger.

Conscious communication can be defined as a way of talking and listening that is focused on growing strong, mutually enriching relationships. Our Smile Club is a new discussion group focusing on conscious communication that will meet at the library every Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. starting on January 4. OSC is about discovering your personal foundation where one can find certainty in relationships with self and others.

The views, information, or opinions expressed during this program are solely those of the individuals involved and do not necessarily represent those of the City of Cottonwood or its employees.

Location:  Dede Ewald Room
Contact:   / /
Description:

Hosted by Jim Ahlstrom, a former radio personality now living in Cottonwood, the program will feature music from the Big Band Era along with a special emphasis each month on a featured big band leader, a short bio and a sampling of their best known hits. Noted big band singers will also be featured. Ahlstrom says he’ll conduct some trivia elements involving big band themes, song titles, and lyrics to challenge the audience. The audience will also be introduced to foreign big bands, one or two novelty songs and portions of big band radio remotes recorded during that era. Current artists of the big band genre will also be presented. The host also said the audience will be encouraged to bring in their favorite song on cd or challenge him to find it in his vast collection of music. “I’m hoping that the attendees will not only enjoy listening to some long forgotten tunes but will also enjoy participating in the trivia portion of the evening,” Ahlstrom added.
