10:30 AM - 11:30 AM    Jerome History with Peggy Hicks

Location:  Library Meeting Room B
Contact:   / /
Description:  Join local author Peggy Hicks in the Cottonwood Public Library Meeting Room B on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for a presentation entitled Madams, Moonshiners, Murder and Mayhem as she presents some of the more sinister history of Jerome, Arizona. This is a special presentation for the Adult Summer Reading Program.
Jerome’s glory days were packed with hard rock miners, bootleggers, dope peddlers, crooked bureaucrats, and prostitutes. The town was so filled with vice that in 1903 the New York Sun’s newspaper dubbed Jerome as the “Wickedest Town in the West.” With all this dangerous living, tragic deaths were sure to follow. People died in mining accidents, gunfights, opium overdoses, alcoholism and murder, along with a number of other unnatural events. With its violent past, it comes as no surprise that this “Ghost City” on the hill is purportedly filled with wandering spirits. Included in her presentation will be some very interesting relics and antiques from that time period which are currently on display in one of the Library’s display cases. This lecture is free and open to the public. The Library is located at 100 S 6th St in Cottonwood.

Location:  Library Meeting Room
Contact:   / /
Description:       If you want to learn more about the history of Jerome, Peggy Hicks is the one to talk to. Her interest in the history of the area has not diminished since her first book, The Ghost of the Cuban Queen Bordello, a story about a real bordello in Jerome in the 1920s. Her second book, Ghost Town Stories and Wicked Legends, blends the past with the present, and
historical places with fictional characters in a collection of 13 short allegorical tales creating unforgettable ghost stories.
Join Hicks as she shares some of the photographs, relics and stories of Jerome when it was a bustling mining town.

Description:       On every Thursday of the month the Authentic Spiritual Conversation group will be meeting to create a safe interfaith space for discussing timely spiritual topics. The goal is to mutually support participants in putting their spiritual values into practice in an environment where we respect the right of each member to follow their own spiritual path. This group is developed on the idea that spiritual development can be enhanced within the context of a safe, supportive, and compassionate fellowship which allows for deep inquiry.
All faiths, including “spiritual but not religious,” agnostic, and atheist are welcome to this weekly meeting. The conversation is focused around a different topic each week, where the emphasis is on empathic listening and supportive dialogue. Participants are invited to share their personal understanding, experience, and practices related to the topic of discussion. All are invited to suggest weekly topics of interest such as “How to express our spiritual values (e.g., peace, love, forgiveness) in a world filled with negative energy.”
